Trestle Dining Table

This item is made to order and ships in 8-10 weeks.

All James & James items are made to order, customized to the specifications you select. Crafted from solid hardwood, our furniture is built for everyday use and ready to become your next heirloom.  Every piece is hand-finished in the color of your choosing, then sealed with a polyurethane finish to further protect the surface.

The length and width of your table are custom to the dimensions you choose above. That’s the beauty of James & James!

Notes:

Crafted from Knotty Alder Hardwood, this dining table boasts natural grains and filled knots to create a smooth surface.

This tabletop is approximately 1.75" thick and the table has a standard dining height of 30" tall. To arrive at the clearance underneath, subtract 1.75" from the total height of the table.

For tables 6' to 9' long, the table base inset is 13". For a table that is 9.5' long, the inset is 22". A 10' table has an inset of 24".

For tables between 10.5' and 12' long, the inset returns to 13", with a third base centered for additional support.

Disclaimer:

Please note that each measurement is an approximation, as these pieces are hand-built. We allow for up to 1" in variation to accommodate the unique nature of handcrafted furniture.

Knots on surface areas are filled by our carpenters, ensuring a smooth surface that's easy to clean, while all other knots are left open and natural. For daily care, we recommend using water and any cleaning product safe for wood surfaces. Avoid abrasive cleaners and harsh chemicals as it will deteriorate the finish and could cause damage. Remember to use a trivet or coaster for items too hot to touch.

What is a trestle table?

  • A trestle table is, simply put, a tabletop balanced or secured atop two or more trestle supports. Traditional trestle supports are comprised of sets of isosceles triangles, formed by two joined beams, which are connected across the top with another long plank or beam.
  • Woodworking has advanced greatly since the Middle Ages, and modern wooden trestle tables come in a wide variety of styles. James+James offers plenty of options so you can achieve a totally custom look for your heirloom trestle dining table.

What is the origin of the trestle table?

  • Some of the earliest records of trestle tables come from the European Middle Ages. It’s been theorized that the style rose to popularity when people stopped reclining during meals (in other words, after the Roman period). Trestle tables leave plenty of room for chairs and benches underneath.

Can you use a trestle table as a dining table?

  • You can absolutely use a trestle table as a dining room table. In fact, solid wood trestle dining tables are a fixture of American woodworking. The design has worked fabulously for hundreds of years, and trestle tables can be found in restaurants, refectories, Shaker meeting halls, and kitchen and dining rooms across the country to this day.
  • When you order a trestle dining room table from James+James, you can customize it from top to bottom and select the perfect seating to go along with it. We’ll be happy to hand-build your dream dining room set from scratch.

How sturdy are trestle tables?

  • Well-made trestle tables are incredibly sturdy. Trestles are so sturdy, in fact, that they’ve been used for centuries to create not just tables and desks, but also structural scaffolding, work surfaces, and even bridges.
  • Trestle or not, any piece of furniture you purchase from James+James is guaranteed to look fabulous and withstand daily wear and tear. We’re passionate about our work and stand by what we make—that’s the James+James Promise.
